🚫 Midjourney Bans Generating Images of Chinese President Xi Jinping
Midjourney, a text-to-image AI service, just banned users from creating images of Chinese President Xi Jinping. But that hasn't stopped the ppl from using workarounds for their deepfakes. 🕵️♂️
Here's the lowdown:
🚷 Midjourney now strictly prohibits generating images of Xi Jinping (guess he's off-limits, folks!)
🧪 Users on Twitter have discovered workarounds: “It is still possible with /imagine, if you provide the full URL of an existing photo of Xi in the prompt. Or you can use /blend with two existing photos.”
🆓 The platform disabled access to its free trial version to combat deepfakes (bye-bye, freebies!)
Interesting the lengths China will go to protect their leaders image. This is the same country that bans Winnie the Pooh because ppl think it looks like Xi… 🤔
Critics say this ban constitutes censorship, but Midjourney's CEO says it's for “the greater good”… hmmm…
🥽 Meta Launches AI + Robot Combo
Meta's working on some AI projects that could eventually make robots more humanlike and let them learn directly from humans. Allegedly, we're still a long way from being replaced. 😅
Here's the low down:
🧠 One project is an artificial visual cortex, helping robots process images and interact with the world
🤹♀️ Another project focuses on adaptive skill coordination, enabling robots to navigate rooms and complete tasks (like fetching a stuffed animal 🐻)
🐢 Progress might be slow, but experts are amazed by what current technology can achieve
Contemporary discussion (hype?) about LLMs and “pausing AGI development” seems oblivious of Moravec’s paradox.
We’ve hypothesized since the 80s — that the hardest problems in AI involve sensorimotor control, not abstract thought or reasoning.

So, while Meta's AI robots aren't about to take over the world, they're definitely getting closer to moving around more freely – without a controller! Is it fascinating or terrifying? You decide! 🤖🌎

one thing coming up in the debate about the pause letter i really agree with:
openai should make a great alignment dataset and alignment evals and release those!
bonus points if we can find a prototype democratic process for 'what we align to'.
